The Vatican is a city/state and is recognized as a sovereign nation by the rest of the world. We send an ambassador there just as we send an ambassador to Israel. You couldn't sell the Vatican anymore than you could sell Israel.
As for those who say "they should sell one of their statues" I say this: how does it serve humanity if Donald Trump buys the Pieta for display in a casino? Would the Jewish Ms. Silverman suggest billboard advertising space be sold at the sacred wailing wall in Jerusalem? There is good reason some things are considered priceless.
