Gotcha Morning | Obama vs. Romney on Gun Control
Less than a week has passed since the deadly shooting occurred in Aurora, Colorado and President Obama and Mitt Romney have decidedly broken their short-lived truce. Yesterday, both men attempted to clarify their positions on what steps they think America can take to prevent another massacre like this one. On October 3rd, Obama and Romney will face off at their first debate, in Denver, Colorado, on domestic issues, which will surely cover the gun control issue. For now, here are their positions.
While both men preface their remarks with definitive support of the Second Amendment, there are some clear differences in their approaches. Mainly, President Obama speaks of action, while Mitt Romney speaks of inaction. President Obama recognizes that the weapons the shooter used were purchased legally and there is little to nothing in the current law that could have prevented him from doing so. Mitt Romney deflects the conversation away from guns and towards the homemade bombs in the gunman's apartment, which have the distinction of being illegal, but not of being used to kill anyone in this case. President Obama states concrete steps he will take to work with Congress towards a goal of "violence reduction." Mitt Romney refuses to limit any rights for gun owners and fails to lay out any specifics for preventing tragedies like the one in Colorado from happening again.
