Gotcha Morning | Harry Reid vs. The World

Senator Harry Reid didn't appear on any of the Sunday morning political talk shows yesterday, but he was a major topic of conversation. After suggesting that an unnamed source told him that Mitt Romney had paid zero taxes for 10 years, Senator Reid has found himself in a stand-off with the former Governor. Will Harry Reid reveal his mysterious source? Or will Mitt Romney be forced to finally release his tax returns?
Over the last few days, Jon Stewart has called Harry Reid "really, really terrible," Mitt Romney's told him to "put up or shut up," and RNC Chairman Reince Priebus has called him a "dirty liar" (twice).
Last Thursday, Mitt Romney advisor Eric Fehrnstrom was the first to compare Harry Reid to Joe McCarthy by invoking the infamous question, "Have you no sense of decency, sir?" But it was more telling when a non-partisan like Face The Nation's Bob Schieffer brought up the McCarthy analogy yesterday.
"Isn’t this kind of like Joe McCarthy back in the era when he said, ‘I have in my hand the names of 400 people in the State Department who are communists’? It turns out he didn’t, and he was saying that the way to prove that they’re not is for them to come forward there."
With all of this evidence, it's clear that the media has turned its back on Harry Reid, giving the benefit of the doubt to Mitt Romney, who's sticking by his refusal to release anymore tax returns. Most commentators like Schieffer and The New York Times' Frank Bruni have declared that Reid went too far and his accusations are backfiring. But this quote from a Harry Reid "confidante" belies the Senator's aims.
"What’s the downside? Jon Stewart getting all serious and haughty? Harry Reid could not care less. There is no one in politics with a thicker skin. He’s having the last laugh. Reid’s strategy is working. It’s filling news holes and driving conversations."
Reid's not up for re-election this year. Even if he completely made up the "unnamed source" who told him about Mitt Romney's tax history, he figures he can take the heat and the best case scenario is that it forces Romney to release the tax returns he's hiding. Without a doubt it's dirty politics, but it's the kind of no holes barred move we rarely see from the Democrats. In an election as important as this one, it may be just the kind of help President Obama needs.
